Ichthys - "The Fish" Unisex Fleece Hoody

What is the meaning of "Ichthys"?

The Greek word for fish is "ichthys." As early as the first century, Christians made an acrostic from this word: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter meaning Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

What was the reason behind this?

During the first centuries after Christ, believers who identified as Christians were heavily persecuted for their faith. They had to secretly meet in places and tombs in order to worship safely. This symbol, the Fish, was marked on walls letting other believers know that they were in the right place.

Why this symbol and not the cross?

The cross was a Christian symbol easily identified by many. So the “fish” attracted little suspicion, making it a perfect symbol for Christians to identify themselves among friends or foes. “According to one ancient story, when a Christian met a stranger in the road, the Christian sometimes drew one arc of the simple fish outline in the dirt. If the stranger drew the other arc, both believers knew they were in good company.”

This simple, yet profoundly symbolic shirt carries a history of persevering faith that will continue to help others identify who they are while sharing with others why they carry the symbol of a fish not only on their shirts, but in their hearts - Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.
